Our History

St. Luke’s has been providing compassionate healthcare to Houstonians for almost five decades from its flagship hospital location in the Texas Medical Center. Founded in 1954 by the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital delivers primary and tertiary healthcare to patients from the local area and from around the world.

Since 1962, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital has maintained a valuable relationship with its research and education partner Texas Heart Institute. Together, the two have achieved numerous milestones, including the nation’s first successful human heart transplant.

In 1997, St. Luke’s established St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System and created St. Luke’s Episcopal Health Charities, which is now the largest local charity devoted to health services. In 2002, the System purchased full ownership of KS Management Services, L.L.P., with its 23 health clinics, greatly expanding the primary-care reach of St. Luke’s throughout the greater Houston area. The opening of St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital, an 150-bed hospital, is one more milestone in St. Luke’s service to the community.
